As with many parts of London, Finchley was open fields until the arrival of the trains in the mid-nineteenth century but thereafter it quickly developed into a solid middle class suburb, a process which continued in the twentieth century with the arrival of the tube. These days it remains a well-established residential area with a good stock of Victorian and Edwardian properties interspersed with new developments and some low rise council estates.
East Finchley is mainly comprised of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and purpose-built blocks. The most sought after are found in the leafy Fortis Green area, and to the north of here bordering Coldfall Wood.
